Started as a bassless trio five years before, Oliver Schwerdt decided to add two bass players in 2011. Everybody familiar with free jazz stategies knows that a suspended bass gives an important impulse on the interactive level of communication dynamics while structuring music. On the other hand you can set another stimulus if this position isn’t neglected but doubled. Tumult! documents the third meeting of the quintet grouping during a concert in 2013 situated at the legendary naTo, a club that is famous for the international free jazz scene performing in Leipzig/Germany since the early 1980s. On the same stage first contact of Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky, Schwerdt and Christian Lillinger took place in 2006. And it’s here where the first album of the trio grouping was recorded at (Listen to N e w O l d L u t e n T r i o: White Power Blues!). Listening to Tumult! soon it becomes clear that these younger guys make Old Luten’s alto saxophone really burn. On equal terms Oliver Schwerdt is shining his clusterly lines with a hyper-vitalistic energy motorisation. That’s why he has nicknamed himself Elan Pauer. The high level of percussive agitation comes from Christian Lillinger, Schwerdts favored fellow on drums, while the humming and pumping of the basses produces a sort of orchestral flavour that surrounds the trio explosions. Tumult! is a vitalistic opera spelling free jazz maestoso.
Tumult! ergötzt sich nicht ‒ Diskurs der Albumtitel ‒ in einer historizistischen Koketterie an dem legendären Alarm des 1981er Nonetts west-europäischer Gründungsheroen des Free Jazz (zusätzlich garniert mit einem Ausrufezeichen à la Ornette!). Und doch besticht das Quintett mit Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky durch dieselbe Dringlichkeit der damaligen Gruppe um Peter Brötzmann. Eine Dringlichkeit, die das ost-deutsche Pendant heute mit Topmusikern der jüngeren Generation gleichermaßen souverän und risikofreudig zu einer aufregenden Mitteilung formt. Dokumentiert ist das wohl atemberaubendste Konzert der Reihe musikalischer Feierlichkeiten, die Petrowsky anlässlich seines 80. Geburtstages auf die Bühne brachte. Nirgends war er in besserer Form als im Leipziger Kult-Club naTo. Ein ununterbrochenen Lauf an Konzentration und Intensität! Tumult! präsentiert ein hochmusikalisches Ensemblegeflechtes im Kraftzentrum zeitgenössischer Improvisationskunst.

Haltung, Attitüde und Sound sind der FMP-Ähstetik der 70er Jahre verpflichtet. Dass Petrowsky die 80 bereits hinter sich gelassen hat, merkt man nicht im Geringsten. Im Vergleich zu Wayne Shorter oder Charles Lloyd sprüht er nur so vor Vitalität.

I remember seeing Bloodcount play at Leeds Irish Centre about this time…the band very nearly outnumbered the audience… but it was one of the best gigs (out of very many) I ever saw and the band were terrific…on fire…25 years ago!!
